What is a 5 cm snowfall trigger?

A snowfall trigger is the accumulation level that activates service. Snowguard London’s residential plans use 5 cm, approximately 2 inches. The trigger creates a clear service standard for routine snow events instead of treating every dusting as a full clearing visit.

Reaching 5 cm does not mean every property is cleared at that exact moment. Crews work through planned routes, and timing depends on continuing snowfall, road conditions, visibility, traffic and the duration of the storm. During a long event, operations may continue while more snow is falling.

What is cleared on a seasonal plan?

Every seasonal plan includes the residential driveway, the walkway leading from the driveway to the home, and the front or side entrance stairs connected to that cleared route. This creates one usable path from the vehicle area to the chosen entrance.

Tell us which entrance your household normally uses and identify any stairs, railings, narrow passages or obstacles during the property assessment. Additional detached paths, decks or other areas can be discussed separately. Optional salting, de-icing and ice melt are quoted as add-ons.

Why snow returns at the end of the driveway

Municipal plows move snow from the road toward the curb. That can leave a dense ridge, often called a windrow, across a driveway that was already cleared. Seasonal service includes a return visit when a city plow blocks the driveway entrance.

The City of London explains that major roads and bus routes are prioritized and that neighbourhood work can take longer after a storm. Its winter-maintenance information also says snow from a private driveway must not be pushed into the street or onto a sidewalk. How to prepare for a clearing visit

Clear access lets the crew complete more of the agreed area safely and reduces packed snow around vehicles and obstacles. Include unusual access needs in your quote request before the season begins.

  • Move vehicles when possible so the agreed driveway area is accessible.
  • Mark low garden borders, curbs or objects that become hidden under snow.
  • Keep garbage bins, cords, toys and portable sports equipment out of the route.
  • Tell us which front or side entrance and stairs should connect to the cleared walkway.
  • Keep pets indoors while equipment and crews are working.
